America’s Children for America’s Heroes Operation Appreciation Program |
| National holidays, like Christmas and Veterans' Day, are especially lonely times for veterans living in VA Hospitals. Many of the veterans do not have families having outlived their parents and siblings. The VA Hospital or care facility may be the only home these veterans have resided in over the past years. These men and women, who served their country so heroically, now spend most holidays alone in their hospital rooms. The NCOA National Defense Foundation Operation Appreciation as a special outreach program whose purpose is to let these veterans know that their unselfish contributions to this great nation have not been, nor will they ever be, forgotten.
Operation Appreciation allows this country's citizens and America’s elementary aged school children to show respect and appreciation to these courageous veterans through cards and gifts. The joy these acts bring to veterans is tremendous. In fact, we routinely hear from hospital administrators, nursing staffs and hospital volunteers that workers and veterans alike are moved by the tender expressions of greetings from today’s really young Americans.
NCOA National Defense Foundation needs help from its worldwide chapters, members of the NCOA International Auxiliary, the Board of Directors and supporters across the country to help coordinate Operation Appreciation's America’s Children for America’s Heroes Program by eliciting the involvement of schools, DOD schools, scouting organizations, civic organizations, places of worship, and countless others to become partners in this endeavor. Please email faschneider@ncoadc.org or call the NCOA National Capital Office (703) 549-0311 for information packets to share with your community. Members of Facebook, please join our group, America’s Children for America’s Heroes Greeting Card Program.
During 2009 over 7,500 veterans and military personnel at Ft. Hood related military hospital facilities following the domestic Terrorism Attack. One of the Ft. Hood facilities has assigned military staff in Iraq and cards were provided for the wounded military personnel.
